"Easy Stages" & "Don't Blame it on the Boots"

19th-22nd June 2002

A double bill of Comedies by N J Warburton

Easy Stages

Whilst 'Don 't Blame it on the Boots' centered around the onstage difficulties of the amateur dramatic society's production of Hamlet, here we saw the stage crew struggling to play their part. As Gerry, the stage manager observed, "moving furniture has always been a bloody sight more difficult than moving actors" This was especially true when one member of the crew was having an affair with the leading actress, the producer insisted on adding her bright ideas to the set and Patsy managed to do everything wrong, including accidentally tearing up Gerry's precious chart. This play was an amusing and subtle parody of the backstage goings-on of an amateur dramatics society.

Don't blame it on the Boots

No-one would have blamed it on the boots if only Kate had produced Macbeth instead of Hamlet; Ophelia hadn't been so attractive and naive; Eric had been blessed with smaller feet and wasn't the drama group's flirt; Liz's father hadn't been a professional actor who once trod the boards at Stratford in those self same boots.

But ....... Kate did produce Hamlet, Eric flirted outrageously with the impressionable Ophelia, and Liz insisted that the Ghost wore the boots. On the last night of the production the boots are worn but not, as everyone thought, by Eric, because he was trapped in the dressing room all evening. So who gave such an impressive performance as the Ghost?
