The Duston Players are a well established Amateur Dramatic Society with a strong and loyal membership, but we are always keen to welcome new members. We alternate between doing three plays a year or two plays and a pantomime.

You may want to join to act, or just to work behind the scenes where there are equally important jobs to be done. It's not all work though, the players also like to meet for social events each year and usually wind down after rehearsals at a local pub.

Rehearsals usually take place twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays normally at Duston Community Centre. (Pendle Road, Duston, Northampton NN5 6DT.) As this is currently closed we are rehearsing in a temporary venue.

In addition to Actors and a Producer/Director a typical play needs:

  • Set builders, who know which end of a screwdriver is for screwing (and which end to use as a hammer)
  • A Stage Manager who can take charge backstage during performances, keeping everyone calm and making sure everyone else backstage knows what they are doing.
  • An Electrician who can wire and set up stage lights, doorbells, telephones etc.. and a button pusher who can operate them during performances.
  • Someone to open and close the curtains to the stage at each end of a scene.
  • Someone to make any required sound effects, or play incidental music - normally using a tape recorder or CD player.
  • Someone to move the scenery and make sure the right ' props' and furniture are on stage when each scene starts.
  • A Wardrobe mistress to help the actors/actresses get into costume
  • Front of house staff to sell tickets at the door and teas and coffees, and to let the audience in. (and out)
  • Pantomimes may also require singers for a chorus line, dancers, musicians and we like to involve a few children.

- and there are numerous other equally important jobs, allowing the actors to concentrate on their performances.
